Things to do
Ski Mount Mansfield in winter, walk or bike beside the West Branch in warmer months, and enter Smugglers' Notch only when Route 108 is open. The Current and the Vermont Ski and Snowboard Museum are the named indoor alternatives near the village.
Start with the season
Give the full day to the ski area when lifts and the terrain your group wants are open. For cross-country skiing or snowshoeing, spend that day on Trapp Family Lodge's separate Nordic network instead of adding it after downhill laps.
Use the Recreation Path for an easy half-day on foot or bike. Cady Hill is the better choice for riders who want wooded singletrack close to town; stay off the trails whenever posted mud closures are in effect.
Make the notch the main outing while Route 108 is open: drive the boulder chicanes, then choose Sterling Pond or a shorter walk. Skip the pass when the road is closed rather than approaching it as a through-route.
Route 100 gives the broad valley view; Mountain Road climbs toward Mansfield; the lower notch approach closes in beneath steeper forest. On a peak weekend, choose one of those drives instead of crawling between all three, then finish on foot near Main Street.
Join near the village for an easy walk beside the West Branch, or use a farther access point for a longer out-and-back ride. Bridges, meadows, and wooded riverbanks change the view without requiring a mountain trailhead.
Lower Mountain Road and village
The contemporary-art center at 90 Pond Street presents exhibitions and education programs close to the village. Its galleries add a genuine cultural stop when the mountain is wet, windy, or closed in by cloud.
Cady Hill rises from the lower Mountain Road corridor rather than a remote trailhead. Its wooded network gives riders trail access from town; respect posted mud closures and current trail guidance.
The Main Street museum traces Vermont racing, resorts, equipment, and snowsports history. It connects the village to the mountain culture outside without requiring another drive up the ski corridor.
South and north of Main Street
Gold Brook Covered Bridge is a brief historic stop. The Trapp Family Lodge Outdoor Center can occupy a winter half-day on its own, while the Alchemist is a compact beer stop rather than a substitute for a brewery tour. Check current trail conditions and visitor-center offerings before leaving town.
The wooden bridge spans Gold Brook southeast of the village, away from Mountain Road's resort traffic. Treat it as a short roadside historic stop and avoid blocking the narrow local road.
The hillside lodge maintains a separate cross-country and snowshoe network above Stowe. It offers a different winter landscape from the lift-served trails on Mount Mansfield; verify current trail operations before going.
The Cottage Club Road visitor center sells current beer releases and merchandise. Treat it as a brewery shop and public tasting-room stop only when the official site lists those offerings; do not assume a production tour.
Two self-guided stops
The Recreation Path needs no ticket or guide. The Alchemist lists its current visitor-center hours and public offerings directly; both can fit into a lower-elevation day near the village.
